The American kestrel is the smallest falcon in North America. Their habitat consists of open fields, farmlands, and pastures with short vegetation. They are a threatened species in New Jersey and their numbers in the eastern US have been declining for 15 years, especially in the northeast. Kestrels are cavity-nesters and accept man-made structures for nesting. Endangered and Nongame Species staff band kestrels to measure survival and population demographics, and monitor occupancy and success of nest boxes across the state.
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the NJ Endangered and Nongame Species Conservation Act, which established laws to protect and restore endangered and threatened wildlife in New Jersey. As a result of the legislation, NJDEP Fish & Wildlife established the Endangered and Nongame Species Program to carry out the work necessary to restore and maintain these species.
